چکیده

The Lagrangian numerical simulation (LNS) scheme presented in this paper is motivated by the multiphase particle-in-cell (MP-PIC). In this numerical scheme we solve the fluid phase continuity and momentum equations on an Eulerian grid. The particle motion is governed by Newton's law thus following the Lagrangian approach. Momentum exchange from the particle to fluid is modeled in the fluid phase momentum equation. Forces acting on the particle include drag from the fluid, body force and force due to interparticle stress. There is freedom to use different models for these forces and to introduce other forces. The effect of viscous stresses are included in the fluid phase equations. The volume fraction of the particles appear in the fluid phase continuity and momentum equations. A finite volume method is used to solve for the fluid phase equations on an Eulerian grid. Particle positions are updated using the Runge-Kutta scheme. This numerical scheme can handle a range of particle loadings and particle types. The LNS scheme is implemented using an efficient three-dimensional time dependent finite volume algorithm. We use a Chorin-type pressure-correction based fractional-step scheme on a non-staggered cartesian grid. In this paper, we consider only incompressible Newtonian suspending fluid. However, the average velocity field of the fluid phase is not divergence-free because its effective density is not constant. Our pressure correction based fractional-step scheme accounts for varying properties in the fluid phase equations. This method can also account for suspending fluids with non-constant properties. The numerical scheme is verified by comparing results with test cases and experiments.

Simulation of Gravity Wave Propagation in Free Surface Flows by an Incompressible SPH Algorithm

This paper presents an incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model to simulate wave propagation in a free surface flow. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a Lagrangian framework using a three-step fractional method. In the first step, a temporary velocity field is provided according to the relevant body forces. This velocity field is renewed in the second step to include t...

Direct Numerical Simulation of the Wake Flow Behind a Cylinder Using Random Vortex Method in Medium to High Reynolds Numbers

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow behind a cylinder, wake flow, using the random vortex method for an incompressible fluid in two dimensions is presented. In the random vortex method, the primary variable is vorticity of the flow field. After generation on the cylinder wall, it is followed in two fractional time step in a Lagrangian system of coordinates, namely convection and diffu...

Evaluation of numerical strategies for large eddy simulation of particulate two-phase recirculating flows

Predicting particle dispersion in recirculating two-phase flows is a key issue for reacting flows and a potential application of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods. In this study, Euler/Euler and Euler/Lagrange LES approaches are compared in the bluff body configuration from Borée et al. [1] where glass beads are injected into a complex recirculating flow. These tests are performed for non-rea...

Direct numerical simulation of particulate flows with heat transfer in a rotating cylindrical cavity.

The purpose of this work was the direct numerical simulation of heat and fluid flow by granular mixing in a horizontal rotating kiln. To model particle behaviour and the heat and fluid flow in the drum, we solve the mass conservation, momentum and energy conservation equations directly on a fixed Eulerian grid for the whole domain including particles. At the same time the particle dynamics and ...

Diffusion-inertia Model for Two-phase Turbulent Flows and its Implementation into OpenFOAM

The existing strategies of modelling turbulent two-phase flows can be subdivided into two groups depending on the Lagrangian tracking and Eulerian continuum approaches for handling the particulate phase. In the framework of the Lagrangian method, the particles are assumed to encounter a series of turbulent eddies randomly, and the macroscopic particle properties are determined by solving stocha...

An overview and examples of the application of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to prediction and the scientific study of dispersed, turbulent two-phase flows is presented. This contribution focuses on Eulerian-Lagrangian treatments in which dispersed phase properties are obtained from discrete particle trajectories. The scope of the approaches considered are on...
